Spasticity management

Spasticity is a condition characterized by increased muscle tone, stiffness, and involuntary muscle contractions, commonly seen in neurological disorders such as stroke, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, or multiple sclerosis. It can interfere with movement, posture, and daily activities, and may lead to pain or joint deformities if not managed properly. Effective spasticity management focuses on reducing muscle tightness, improving mobility, and enhancing overall functional independence through a combination of therapies and medical interventions.

Treatment Approaches

Spasticity management involves a multidisciplinary approach tailored to the severity and individual needs of the patient. The goal is to improve comfort, prevent complications, and support functional movement.

  • Regular stretching and range-of-motion exercises to reduce stiffness
  • Physical therapy to improve mobility and muscle control
  • Medications to relax muscles and reduce spasms
  • Use of splints or braces to maintain proper joint position
  • Advanced treatments like botulinum toxin injections in severe cases
  • Proper positioning and posture management to prevent contractures
