Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition that usually affects a limb (arm, leg, hand, or foot) after an injury, surgery, stroke, or trauma. The pain experienced is often out of proportion to the initial injury and may persist for a long time. CRPS is believed to result from dysfunction in the peripheral and central nervous systems, leading to abnormal pain signaling and inflammation. It can cause severe discomfort, changes in skin color and temperature, swelling, and reduced mobility, significantly impacting daily life if not treated early.

Causes & Symptoms of CRPS

CRPS often develops after physical trauma, but the exact cause is not always clear. It involves abnormal nerve responses and inflammation in the affected area.

  • Continuous burning or throbbing pain, usually in a limb
  • Swelling, sensitivity to touch, and temperature changes
  • Skin color changes (red, blue, or pale) and altered skin texture
Treatment & Management of CRPS

Managing CRPS requires early diagnosis and a combination of therapies aimed at reducing pain and improving function.

  • Medications such as pain relievers, corticosteroids, and nerve pain drugs
  • Physical therapy to improve movement and prevent stiffness
  • Psychological support and pain management techniques to cope with chronic pain
