Rheumatic disease management

Rheumatic diseases are a group of conditions that primarily affect joints, muscles, and connective tissues, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and ankylosing spondylitis. These conditions are often chronic, inflammatory, and can lead to pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced joint function. Over time, they may cause joint deformities and disability if not properly managed. The goal of management is to control inflammation, relieve symptoms, prevent joint damage, and maintain functional independence and quality of life.

Management and Rehabilitation

Management of rheumatic diseases requires a comprehensive and long-term approach combining medical treatment with rehabilitation strategies to improve function and reduce disability.

  • Medication therapy: Use of anti-inflammatory drugs, DMARDs, and biologics as prescribed
  • Physiotherapy: Exercises to improve joint mobility, strength, and flexibility
  • Pain management: Use of heat/cold therapy and relaxation techniques
  • Joint protection: Techniques to reduce stress on affected joints during activities
  • Occupational therapy: Training in adaptive techniques for daily tasks
  • Lifestyle modification: Maintaining healthy weight and avoiding joint overuse
