Multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering (myelin) of nerve fibers in the central nervous system. This disrupts communication between the brain and the rest of the body, leading to a wide range of physical, cognitive, and sensory symptoms. The disease progression varies from person to person, with periods of relapse and remission or gradual worsening over time. Early diagnosis and proper management can help control symptoms and improve quality of life.

Symptoms and Impact

Multiple sclerosis can affect different parts of the body depending on which nerves are damaged. Symptoms may come and go or progressively worsen over time.

  • Muscle weakness, stiffness, and difficulty in walking
  • Numbness or tingling sensations in different body parts
  • Fatigue and lack of energy
  • Vision problems such as blurred or double vision
  • Balance and coordination issues
Rehabilitation and Management

Although there is no complete cure for MS, rehabilitation helps in managing symptoms and maintaining independence.

  • Physical therapy to improve strength, mobility, and balance
  • Occupational therapy for daily living activities
  • Medications to control relapses and slow disease progression
  • Speech therapy if communication or swallowing is affected
  • Lifestyle modifications including exercise and stress management
