Lymphedema management

Lymphedema is a condition characterized by swelling, usually in the arms or legs, caused by the accumulation of lymphatic fluid due to damage or removal of lymph nodes during cancer treatment such as surgery or radiation therapy. It can lead to discomfort, heaviness, restricted movement, and an increased risk of infection. Effective management is essential to control swelling, prevent complications, and improve functional ability and quality of life.

Comprehensive Management Approach

Lymphedema management involves a combination of physical therapies and self-care strategies aimed at reducing fluid accumulation and maintaining limb function. The primary approach is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), which includes manual lymphatic drainage (a specialized massage technique to stimulate lymph flow), compression therapy using bandages or garments to prevent fluid buildup, and therapeutic exercises to enhance circulation. Skin care is crucial to prevent infections such as cellulitis, as the affected area is more vulnerable. Patient education plays an important role, teaching proper limb positioning, avoidance of injury, and long-term self-management techniques to control symptoms and prevent progression.

  • Manual lymphatic drainage: Gentle massage to promote lymph flow
  • Compression therapy: Use of bandages or compression garments
  • Exercise therapy: Activities to improve lymph circulation and mobility
  • Skin care: Maintaining hygiene to prevent infections
  • Limb elevation: Helps reduce swelling
