Congenital limb deficiencies

Congenital limb deficiencies are conditions in which a baby is born with a missing or underdeveloped limb due to disturbances during fetal development. These deficiencies can affect the arms, legs, or both, and may vary from partial absence to complete absence of a limb. The exact cause is not always known, but factors such as genetic influences, environmental exposure, or vascular disruptions during pregnancy may contribute. Early diagnosis, proper medical care, and rehabilitation are essential to help individuals achieve maximum independence and functional ability.

Types of Limb Deficiencies
  • Transverse deficiency where the limb develops normally up to a certain point and then stops
  • Longitudinal deficiency where specific bones or parts within the limb are missing
  • Upper limb deficiencies affecting arms, hands, or fingers
  • Lower limb deficiencies affecting legs, feet, or toes
  • Can be unilateral (one side) or bilateral (both sides of the body)
Causes and Risk Factors
  • Genetic factors or chromosomal abnormalities
  • Exposure to harmful substances during pregnancy
  • Vascular issues affecting blood supply to the developing limb
  • Maternal infections or health conditions
  • Unknown or idiopathic causes in many cases
