Myofascial pain

Myofascial pain is a chronic pain condition that affects the muscles and the surrounding connective tissue known as fascia. It is characterized by the presence of sensitive trigger points—tight knots within the muscle—that cause localized pain and can also refer pain to other areas of the body. This condition often develops due to muscle overuse, poor posture, stress, or injury, and is commonly seen in areas like the neck, shoulders, and back. The pain may be deep, aching, and persistent, sometimes accompanied by stiffness and reduced range of motion, which can interfere with daily activities and overall comfort.

Symptoms & Management of Myofascial Pain

Myofascial pain typically presents with muscle tenderness, tightness, and trigger points that produce pain when pressed, along with referred pain patterns that may spread beyond the affected muscle. Individuals may also experience muscle stiffness, fatigue, and difficulty moving the affected area. Management focuses on relieving muscle tension and eliminating trigger points through a combination of treatments such as physical therapy, stretching exercises, massage therapy, dry needling, and medications for pain relief. Improving posture, reducing stress, and maintaining regular physical activity are also important to prevent recurrence and promote long-term muscle health.
